Worldbuilding Tip: Why Boris Is in Shorts — Clothing, Athletics, and What Biology Actually Requires

Boris Volorsky is in shorts.
He is in shorts in October, when the Brooklyn air has gone cool and everyone else in the neighborhood is in layers. He is in shorts in November. He will be in shorts in December, in January, in the kind of February that turns the slush at the corner into a gray slick that nobody wants to step in. His wife, Irina, has stopped commenting on this. His daughter Masha has a clear memory of him at a Christmas Eve church service in shorts and a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, and this memory does not strike her as particularly unusual, because she has never known him to dress any other way.
Boris is a Lupenite. This is relevant.
A Lupenite runs warm. Not uncomfortably, not in a way that requires medical intervention — just warm, consistently, in the way that a radiator in a well-heated building is always warm even when it isn't turned on. The Lupenite metabolism is calibrated for a different baseline than the human metabolism that most people use as the default. Boris in his shorts is not performing eccentricity. He is not indifferent to temperature. He is simply dressed for his actual body, and his actual body does not require the layers that a Pardinian or a Vulpen or a Hyeanid might need to stay comfortable in a New York February.
This is the first principle of clothing in a multi-species world: clothing is not primarily about thermoregulation. It is about modesty, identity, formality, and cultural expression. The thermoregulation question is separate, and for most species, it has already been solved by the body itself.
What the Coat Already Does
The coat — the fur, the mane, the scales, the shell, the bare skin — is already doing something. It is not decorative. It is functional, and in a world built on the conviction that the coat is real and should be taken seriously, clothing design has to account for what the coat already provides.
For a Lupenite like Boris, the coat provides consistent warmth and temperature regulation at the high end. He wears shorts not because he's making a statement but because additional insulation would make him genuinely uncomfortable. This is also why you will rarely see a Lupenite in a heavy winter coat — they simply don't need one. A light jacket in January is fashion, not function. Most Lupenites don't bother with even that.
For a Leonite, the situation is the mane. The Leonite mane is not purely decorative — it generates and retains heat in a way that is genuinely significant. A Leonite in a high collar is not a well-dressed Leonite; it is an overheated one. Leonite formalwear cuts specifically around the mane, giving it room to breathe. A tailor who doesn't know this will produce something technically correct by human-default standards and functionally useless for the person wearing it.
The Tiscythian coat is dense and waterproof in a way that builds on the tiger's natural advantage in water. When a Tiscythian emerges from a pool, the drying time is substantially shorter than for most other species, which matters enormously in athletic contexts. A Tiscythian swimsuit is doing very little work that the coat doesn't already do — the function is primarily about competitive regulations and modesty, not about hydrodynamics.
The point is not that species have different clothing preferences. The point is that species have different functional requirements, and clothing that ignores those requirements is clothing that doesn't work. In a single-species world, you can establish defaults and build from them. In a multi-species world, every species is its own default.
The Ursinian Exception
There is one species whose relationship to winter clothing deserves specific attention, and that is the Ursinian.
Ursinians — the bear people, Black Ursinians and Grizzly Ursinians both — have a biology calibrated for cold in a way that no other species quite matches. The Grizzly Ursinian in particular carries a layer of subcutaneous fat and a coat density that means cold weather is not merely tolerable but actively comfortable. This is the biological inheritance of hibernation: a body built to slow down, conserve, and endure through the coldest months.
The practical result of this is that in Ursinian homes — particularly in families with more traditional sensibilities — there is a custom of winter clothing being relaxed or removed indoors. This is not nudism. It is not a cultural statement about clothing as oppression or freedom. It is the simple practical reality that a Grizzly Ursinian in a well-heated apartment in January is genuinely warm to the point of discomfort in the layers that a Lupenite might find appropriate. The Ursinian family that goes clothing-optional in winter at home is doing the same thing Boris does outside: dressing for their actual body rather than for a human-default temperature norm.
This is called "The Bear's Season" in some informal discourse — the winter period when Ursinians are at their most comfortable, most energetic in their own way, and least interested in the layers everyone else is adding. The species flips the script on winter entirely.
What this means for a worldbuilder: an Ursinian character who strips to the minimal indoors in December is not being strange. They're being comfortable. An Ursinian who layers up in the same way a Vulpen might is probably in a social situation where they're managing others' expectations, not managing their own.
Visual Culture and the Formality Principle
Clothing in a multi-species world is not only functional. It is also cultural, and the cultural function of clothing produces its own set of patterns.
The core principle is this: formality is about effort and intentionality, not about any particular garment. What counts as formal dress varies significantly by species not because some species are more or less formal than others, but because the garments that signal effort and intentionality look different on different bodies.
A Leonite in a crisp linen shirt with the collar open and the mane properly groomed is dressed formally by Leonite standards. The shirt signals the effort. The mane signals the care. The open collar is not casual — it's the accommodation the silhouette requires. Put that same Leonite in a buttoned collar and you have someone who looks uncomfortable, not more formal.
A Pardinian's formal dress might center on particular markings or the careful treatment of the coat rather than a specific garment — the equivalent of a pressed suit is a Pardinian who has spent time on their presentation rather than arrived at the event direct from the field.
For Boris, formal occasions mean the shorts come in a heavier fabric. Irina has a picture of their wedding. Boris is in shorts. They are excellent shorts.
The mistake a worldbuilder makes is treating "formal" as meaning "dressed like a human going to a human event." The correct question is: what does this species do to signal that they took the occasion seriously? That signal will be legible to members of their species, even when it looks casual to outside eyes.
How Athletics Fits In
The clothing question intersects with athletics in a way that's worth being explicit about, because the same principle applies: what does the body already do, and what does the garment need to add?
In school athletics — where the priority is participation, learning, and safety rather than finding the best athlete — the garment question is straightforward. Everyone wears the team uniform, adapted for their species. A Tiscythian in a football uniform is wearing the Giant Grade version; a Lupenite is wearing the Large Grade version. The adaptation is about fit and safety, not about privilege.
But the more important athletic adaptation in a school setting is structural, not sartorial: the rotation.
A middle school football team in Brooklyn has both Giant Grade and Large Grade players. Putting them on the field together is not a clothing problem. It is a physics problem. A Tiscythian lineman and a Lupenite quarterback are not playing the same game at the same risk level if they're on the field simultaneously. The rotation system — Giant Grade plays the first and third quarters, Large Grade plays the second and fourth — solves this without cutting anyone from the roster. One team, two biological configurations, shared score.
The same applies in baseball: alternate by inning. The strategy doesn't change. The score doesn't reset. The coach manages one team with two sets of players, and both sets get to play the sport.
When the Competition Gets Serious
At the school level, the goal is for everyone to participate. At higher levels of competition — club teams, collegiate programs, professional leagues, international athletics — the question changes from "how do we make sure everyone plays?" to "who is the best?"
And that second question, answered honestly, requires species categories.
Consider swimming. A Tiscythian swimmer brings the natural aquatic advantage of tiger biology to the pool: a waterproof coat, a body built for water, a genuine enthusiasm for the medium that shows up in performance. A Lupenite swimmer is also competitive — Lupenites train hard and reach genuine excellence in the water — but the Lupenite and the Tiscythian are not competing for the same result if they're in the same heat. The Tiscythian wins. This tells you nothing about the Lupenite swimmer's training, discipline, or athletic achievement. It tells you only that Tiscythians are built differently than Lupenites, which you already knew.
The Olympic answer is to give both swimmers a gold medal — one for the best Tiscythian swimmer in the world, one for the best Lupenite swimmer in the world. These are different questions with different answers, and both answers are worth having.
This logic runs through every Olympic discipline. Strength competition separates Leonites from Ursinians because explosive power and sustained force are not the same gift. The javelin separates Vulpens from Leonites because the comparison isn't about skill — it's about arm length and body mass. Track sprints separate Jabutuns from everyone else for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who has seen a Jabutun run.
Boris Volorsky held the title of Mr. Russia of the Lupenite Division in bodybuilding from 1988 to 1994. He was measured against what a Lupenite body, trained to its absolute peak, can become. That is a real question with a real answer. His title says something true about what he chose to do with the body he was given.
The Worldbuilder's Checklist
When you're designing clothing and athletic systems for a multi-species world, here are the questions worth asking:
On clothing:
What does the species coat already provide? (Warmth, waterproofing, protection, temperature regulation) — the garment completes this, doesn't duplicate it.
What does the species body shape require? (Collar space for a mane, tail accommodation, wing clearance, different torso proportions) — clothing that ignores the shape doesn't fit and doesn't work.
What signals formality for this species specifically? (Effort, intentionality, care — not a human-default silhouette)
What does this species do in their own home, in comfortable private conditions? (Ursinians in winter; Lupenites who ditch the layer they never needed)
On athletics:
Is this a formation context (everyone participates, the goal is development) or a competition context (finding the best)?
In formation contexts: how does the structural design ensure all species get to participate safely?
In competition contexts: what is the meaningful unit of comparison? (Species category, not cross-species ranking)
What does this species bring biologically, and how does that translate into athletic aptitude? (Not stereotype — accurate description of what the coat provides)
The coat is real. The person inside it is real. Good worldbuilding takes both seriously — which means clothing that actually works for the body wearing it, and athletics that actually measure what they're claiming to measure.
Boris is in shorts. He always has been. He's the best-dressed man in the room.
